EmbolizationEMBOLIZATION OF UTERINE FIBROIDS
THE ORIGIN OF A NEW MINIMUM INVASION TECHNIQUE THAT WOULD REVOLUTIONIZE THE WAY OF ATTENDING PATIENTS WITH MYOMAS
Embolization is a procedure with more than a century of experience, the first antecedents date back to 1904 when melted paraffin was used in a carotid artery to reduce blood flow in a brain tumor. Subsequently, materials with different characteristics were used in different organs of the body, obtaining better and better results.
In the 1990s, numerous medical groups focused on the treatment of Myomatosis successfully ventured into a new, minimally invasive technique that would replace the use of mutilating surgeries such as myomectomy or hysterectomy. This new technique of radiological interventionism was called Uterine Fibroid Emobilization.
Uterine Fibroid Embolization is a highly specialized procedure, considered a safe and efficient alternative to surgery. Currently the treatment is carried out by Interventional Radiologists.
Described for the first time in 1995 by Dr. Ravina and collaborators, it has its precedent in Paris, France, in 1991, when he cites the usefulness of the technique in uterine embolization prior to fibroid surgery to reduce bleeding.
As in all countries of the world, Myomatosis is a disease with a high prevalence, so Dr. Ravina's group of doctors decided to perform embolization to give patients time and better quality of life, while they achieved a surgical appointment. at the hospital.
The surprise came when patients with previously performed uterine artery embolization were called in for surgery, they no longer had fibroid discomfort, and from there it was shown that the uterine fibroid embolization procedure is a definitive treatment.
